  1. Remove furniture and clear the room.
  2. Do a long slow thorough vacuum clean.
  3. Remove dirty tank, then remove and fill the bottom clean water tank with hot tap water. Not boiling water.
  4. The cap on the clean water tank also has a measuring cup. Add 2 cup fills of shampoo to your clean hot water.
  5. Replace both tanks and put the machine against the wall for your first row of cleaning. It is easier to start close to whichever wall the machine is plugged into so you will move away from the power point as you clean.
  6. Turn the machine on and release the handle using the green lever on the back of the handle. Releasing the handle will start the brushes.
  7. Walk forward slowly, squeezing the red trigger in the handle. The trigger sprays clean water into the carpet. The machine is always sucking through the spout when turned on.
  8. Release the trigger and pull the machine slowly backward over where you just went. Repeat this process until the water coming out looks clean. Heavy traffic areas could take up to 4-5 passes.
  9. Continue this process across the room until satisfied the carpets are clean.

How to clean the machine.

  1. ​Empty both tanks and rinse them out thoroughly.
  2. Rinse the brushes on the tools under running water
  3. Wipe down the machine and wipe the red filter
  4. Leave tanks off and flip the machine onto its back
  5. Clean out the hair and fluff from around the brush roller and carriage.
  6. Let machine drip dry before putting it back in the car.

​How to use accessories.

  1. Open the green flap on top of the dirty water tank.
  2. Place the large main hose in the hole and turn clockwise to lock it in place.
  3. Plug the small hose into the flow-meter and turn clockwise to lock in place.
  4. Turn machine on and squeeze the red trigger to spray water. Be careful not to over wet furniture.
  5. Suck up the water through the wide suction head on the handle piece.
  6. Be careful not to bang the hose head into things as you could break it.​​

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the machine equipped with a heating element? How does the water stay hot?
The Big Green® does not contain a heating element. Using hot tap water provides optimal cleaning. Do not boil or heat water in the microwave.
Can I use an extension cord with the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine?
No, an extension cord should not be used with this product. The Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine has a 25 foot cord to assist you with your cleaning needs.
Can I clean area rugs with BISSELL Big Green Carpet Cleaning machine?
BISSELL Big Green carpet cleaning machine can be used to deep clean area rugs. Just make sure that your area rugs or oriental rugs have a solid backing before cleaning them.
How do you clean stairs with the Big Green?
Stairs can be cleaned with 6-inch stain tool and 9-foot hose that are available for an additional rental fee. The hose attaches to the machine and uses the same formula and water mixture that is used for carpets.
How can I remove difficult stains?
The best solution for cleaning difficult spots and stains is to use one of BISSELL’s pre-treat or spot and stain remover products: Heavy Traffic®, Pet Urine Stain & Odor, or OxyDeep® Pro.

No, the Big Green is intended for cleaning carpets and upholstery only. It should not be used on any hard surfaces.
​Can the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine be used to extract water? From a flood for instance?
No, NEVER use this machine on carpet or anywhere where standing water remains. This product should only be used on carpet moistened by the cleaning process.
Does BISSELL Big Green clean pet urine and vomit stains?​
Yes, BISSELL Big Green carpet cleaner does clean pet urine, waste, and vomit stains. The best way to clean up these pet messes is to first remove any solids from the carpet by using two paper plates to scoop up the solid mess and dispose. Then blot excess liquid with paper towel. We recommend pre-treating urine, waste, and vomit stains with Pet Urine Stain & Odor spray. Spray the stain and the surrounding area because stains grow wider when they seep into carpet backing. Let Pet Urine Stain & Odor spray sit on the stain for five to ten minutes and then clean the carpet with BISSELL Big Green cleaning machine. If the stain has dried, scoop up the solids and spray with Pet Urine Stain & Odor spray. Then cover with a damp color-safe towel for 24 hours. This allows the enzymes to break down the organic material. Then use BISSELL Big Green carpet cleaner to deep clean the stains out of the carpet.
Will BISSELL Big Green carpet cleaning machine work on all types of carpet?​
We recommend checking manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for your carpet before using BISSELL Big Green carpet cleaning machine on any type of carpeted surface. Extra caution should be taken when using this machine on frieze carpet.
How much water will BISSELL Big Green carpet cleaner leave behind?​
The amount of water left behind when using BISSELL Big Green carpet cleaner will depend on how much water is sprayed during the carpet cleaning process as well as how many dry suction passes are completed. We recommend two dry suction passes after two wet spraying passes to decrease dry time. BISSELL Big Green carpet cleaning machine puts down less water than many competitive machines.
